Whale Sharks in Galapagos

Top Right Solid Corner

There are very few places in the world where whale sharks, Rhincodon typus,  appear regularly and the Galapagos Islands is one of those places.

The Galapagos Archipelago, consisting of 19 main islands and many smaller islands,  is in the Pacific Ocean, 600 miles west of Ecuador. Because of their remoteness they stayed undisturbed for many years and are a remarkable underwater paradise. The central and southern islands host many land and marine creatures but the northern islands of Darwin and Wolf are the best places to encounter to encounter whale sharks.

Whale sharks in Galapagos are one of the main attractions, but security measures are taken in order to prevent injuries by accident to both visitors and the whale sharks. The whale shark is solitary and rarely seen in groups unless feeding at locations with an abundance of food. It is a filter feeder and is gentle and not aggressive toward people and usually indifferent to divers. The predictable occurrence of whale sharks in a location, has led to the development of a whale watching tourism industry, but evidence of the impact of this is difficult to obtain.
