Whale Sharks in Hawaii

Top Right Solid Corner

Sharks are important in Hawaiian culture. The Hawaiian dictionary lists nine Hawaiian Gods that were associated with sharks. Sometimes a dead relation could be reincarnated as a shark and become a guardian spirit, an Aumakua, which is a family god or deified ancestor.

The whale shark is not a whale but has its own family, Rhicodontidae, and is closely related to leopard sharks and nurse sharks.

Whale sharks roam the world's tropical oceans and are occasionally seen in Hawaii. Boaters, fishermen and pilots have seen them off the lee shores of Oahu and the Big Island. The channel between Maui and Molokai is also a popular area for whale sharks.

Unfortunately, the world’s largest fish is on the verge of extinction. The World Conservation Union lists them as 'Vulnerable'. A number of non-profit organizations work to protect whale sharks from overexploitation and the very real threat of extinction.
