Whale Sharks on Ningaloo Reef

Top Right Solid Corner

The whale shark, Rhincodon typus, the largest fish in the world, is one of the species that inhabits Ningaloo Reef, a protected marine park that is Australias largest fringing coral reef, running160 miles along the length of the North West Cape. The warm waters of Ningaloo Marine Park are also home to an abundance of marine life including soft and hard corals, manta rays, sea snakes, whales, turtles, sharks and over 500 species of tropical fish.

Ningaloo Reef is a virtually untouched barrier reef protecting a shallow, brilliant white sandy lagoon of clear tropical waters. One of the rare places on earth where you are able to walk from the beach straight onto a coral reef. Famous for its whale sharks which feed there during March to June, the reef is also rich in coral and other marine life. During the winter months, the reef is part of the migratory routes for dolphins, dugongs, manta rays and humpback whales. The beaches of the reef are an important breeding ground for loggerhead, green and hawksbill turtles. They also depend on the reef for nesting and food.

Self- and guided tours are a prime recreational activity, and the conservation debate continues on its potential tourism development.
