The silky shark, Carcharhinus falciformis, is one of the larger sharks, typically around 8 feet long, though can grow up to 11 feet.  It has a slender body, rounded snout, and round eyes.  There are usually 15 rows of teeth on either side of both jaws, and they have five pairs of gill slits.

Silky sharks have a metallic-brown to dark gray back and a white belly. They have a faint light stripe along the flank. In the young sharks the fins have a slightly darker tip.  The color fades to dull gray after the shark is slaughtered.

The silky shark feeds mainly on bony fishes, including tuna, mackerel, sardines, mullets, sea catfish, eels, and porcupinefish. They may also take squid, paper nautilus, and swimming crabs, using open-mouthed slashing attacks through schools of prey. Groups of silky sharks can be found trailing schools of tuna.

The silky shark is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sharks in the oceans.  Because of this, it was previously thought to be immune to depletion from being incidentally killed by fishing fleets. Just in one year, 1989, more than 900,000 silky sharks were killed as bycatch in the Pacific tuna longline fishery. However, silky shark numbers are now declining worldwide, as their slow reproductive rate cannot sustain such high levels of exploitation. Silky shark are estimated to have declined up to 91% in the Gulf of Mexico, over 90% in the central tropical Pacific, and 60% off Costa Rica, yet there are no international conservation schemes in place.
