Silky Shark Facts and Photos on this Large Requiem Shark

Top Right Solid Corner

The silky shark, Carcharhinus falciformis, gets its name from its relatively smooth hide, which is comprised of very densely packed dermal denticles.  It is one of the requiem sharks and abundant in pelagic tropical waters around the world.

A large, slender shark, the silky shark has an extended, rounded snout, a sloping first dorsal fin,  and a small second dorsal fin with an extremely long free rear tip. Its pectoral fins are long and slender, with dusky tips. The silky shark grows to around eight feet long and is a deep, metallic bronze-gray above and white below.

The silky shark is regarded as potentially dangerous to humans. It rarely comes into contact with people due to its oceanic habits but, its natural curiosity and boldness lead it to approach divers, and it can become dangerously excited in the presence of food.

There are no commercial fisheries that target the silky shark, however it is caught in large numbers by multi-species fisheries worldwide. It is the second-most common shark caught as bycatch (next to the blue shark) in tuna longline and purse seine fisheries operating throughout its range. The silky shark is mainly valued for its fins, popular on the Hong Kong shark fin market. The flesh, hide, and liver oil are also sold, and this species is the predominant source of the dried shark jaw curios sold to tourists in the tropics.

The silky shark is however vulnerable to over-fishing due to its long gestation period, low number of cubs and slow growth rate. It is listed as "Near Threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature  (IUCN).
