Shortfin Mako Shark Photos and Information on The Effects of Commercial Fishing

Top Right Solid Corner

Worldwide, the shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus,  with its slow reproductive rate,  is a victim of over-harvesting by direct hunting, and by-catch of the tuna and swordfish fishing industries. The desire in some parts of the world  for shark fin soup and the flesh of the shortfin mako has lead to a decrease in population numbers.

The United States National Marine Fisheries Service  has included the shortfin mako on their list of "managed" pelagic sharks. The NMFS has reduced the number of commercial and recreational shortfin mako catches per year by 50 per cent in an attempt to halt its decline. However, these regulations apply only to the United State's Atlantic and Gulf waters

The shortfin mako is listed as Lower Risk on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
