Shortfin Mako Shark Photos and Information on This Apex Predator

Top Right Solid Corner

Shortfin mako sharks, Isurus oxyrinchus, feed on some of the worlds fastest schooling tunas and billfish and are considered apex predators. They also feed on squid, dolphins, porpoise, blue sharks, bonito, sea turtles, and mackerels, swordfish, sailfish, and herons.

Shortfin mako shark’s teeth are long, thin, and sharp, and are located in rows that rotate into use as needed. The first two rows are used in catching prey; as teeth are lost, broken, or worn down, they are replaced by new teeth that rotate into place. As they grow, over 10 feet, their anterior teeth become wider and flatter enabling them to prey effectively upon dolphins, swordfish, and other sharks.

Shortfin mako’s have well developed large eyes, and an endothermic circulatory system that maintains their muscle temperature a few degrees above the water temperature.
