Scalloped Hammerhead Shark Photos and Information on Schooling

Top Right Solid Corner

Scalloped hammerhead sharks, Sphyrna lewini, can be solitary at times, but at other times will form huge schools of hundreds of individuals. Not all reasons for this are known but it is believed to be related to feeding patterns and reproduction.  Populations in some parts of the world are stationary, while others migrate to the poles in summer. Females also have been known to migrate, which is believed to be due to a stage in their sexual development.

Groups will form huge schools in regions where there are seamounts and pinnacles, where the largest females will force the smaller ones out of the center. The males select a mate from the dominant females and the pairs leave the school to mate.
