Bull Shark Pictures and Facts on This Aggressive Shark considered Dangerous to People

Top Right Solid Corner

The bull shark, Carcharhinus leucas, is one of the three most dangerous sharks to people, along with tiger sharks and great white sharks, and is believed to be the most dangerous of that group.  Because the bull shark is very common, and lives in coastal shallow waters, often murky waters, they are considered responsible for most of the shark attacks that take place near the shore, even when the actual type of shark is not clearly identified. The International Shark Attack File lists 69 unprovoked attacks by bull sharks on people around the world, 17 of which resulted in fatality. This number is probably under-reported due to the wide habitat of the bull shark which includes many third-world countries which do not report attacks.

Bull sharks have been known to head-butt their prey before attacking, and are extremely territorial and will attack other animals, including people, dogs and horses, that go into their territory.

The diet of the bull shark is very broad, depending on its location, but mostly consists of bony fish and small sharks. They also eat sting rays, sea turtles, dolphins, crabs, shrimp, sea birds, mollusks, crustaceans, and squid. It will eat almost anything. Bull shark teeth are triangular, serrated, and very sharp. The teeth are in rows that rotate into use as needed. The first two rows are used in catching prey, and as teeth are lost, broken, or worn down, they are replaced by new teeth that rotate into place.

The bull shark is currently listed by the IUCN as "Near Threatened". They are fished widely for their meat, hides, and oils,  and its inshore nurseries are often threatened by their proximity to beaches people frequent, and many die in beach protection nets.

The bull shark is not legally protected in any part of its range, and their numbers are likely shrinking.
