Blue Shark Pictures Showing Their Unusual Teeth, Skin, and Eyes

Top Right Solid Corner

The blue shark, Prionace glauca, has  teeth that are curved, pointed and serrated, and help it to catch slippery squid and fish. The teeth are located in rows that rotate into use as needed as teeth are lost, broken, or worn down.  Blue sharks have a leathery skin, covered with a layer of small tooth-like structures called dermal denticles, and females have skin that is three times thicker than that of males to withstand the rigors of mating. Untanned shark skin is called shagreen, and is used like sandpaper.

Ampullae of Lorenzini are small pits that cover large areas of skin on the snout of the shark, and serve as electrical sensors to detect the electrical fields of other animals. They have large eyes with a nictitating membrane, or inner eyelid, that can be drawn across the eye to protect it.

Blue shark suffer from a number of parasites such as tapeworm, that they ingest from their prey. Parasite loads can be more than 3,000 individuals and can cause eye sight problems and gill problems. Copepods use the blue shark as a host, with some sharks carrying over five different species at one time. Pilot fish, Naucrates ductor, follow sharks to feed on parasites and leftovers. Blue sharks rarely feed on a pilot fish, and smaller pilot fish have been seen swimming into sharks' mouth to clean fragments of food between their teeth.
