Pipefish and Leafy Sea Dragon Pictures |

Sea horses,
pipefish, and leafy sea dragons are closely related
fish of the Syngnathidae family. Sea horses and pipefish
are mainly found in shallow tropical and temperate
waters throughout the world in sea grass beds, coral
reefs, or mangroves. Leafy sea dragons are found
around southern and western Australia. They can range
from less than an inch long for sea horses, to more
than 18 inches for some of the leafy sea dragons.
Sea horses are named for their equine appearance,
leafy sea dragons for the leafy protrusions on their
body that are used for camouflage, and pipe fish
for the form of their snout which is like a long
tube. One of their common features is that the eggs
are brooded by the male. The female deposits her
eggs in a special pouch or brood patch on the male’s
body, and the male then fertilizes the eggs. The
male broods the eggs to maturity and then releases
them into the water whereupon they are completely
independent of their parents.
