Striped marlin, Tetrapturus audax, occur either singly or in small groups. They congregate during the spawning season and sometimes when feeding. When feeding on small schooling prey, they hunt cooperatively, working together to herd the bait into tight clusters. They spend most of their time in the upper waters of the ocean, above the thermocline, usually within 30 feet of the surface, although making occasional forays to greater depths. They are highly visual predators, with color vision, and are believed to feed exclusively by day. Their retinas are divided into two parts. The part that receives light from the upper surface waters contains many cones, which afford color vision, but require high light levels. The portion of the retina that receives light from below lacks cones and is adapted to perceiving contrast with low light input.

Striped marlin will sometimes “tail” or surface swim while resting, particularly when there are high waves. They swim slowly at the surface with the dorsal fin usually retracted, but with the caudal fin, or tail, exposed above the surface.
