The striped marlin, Tetrapturus audax, also known as the barred marlin, lives in tropical, subtropical, and temperate areas of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, generally in cooler more temperate water than the black or blue marlin, staying near the surface. They are the most widely distributed of the marlin species, mostly solitary but will form small schools when spawning and feeding.
The striped marlin has a metallic blue-black body with up to 20 lavender vertical stripes, and silvery white below. The vertical bars, as well as the fins and other body markings can change color rapidly. These variable color patterns may be used to coordinate group hunting behavior while feeding and/or to frighten and control the prey. Striped marlin have an elongated upper jaw which forms a sword for slashing and stabbing prey and for defense against potential predators. Striped marlin have dark almost black fins, the front of the dorsal fin is high, and the pectoral fins can be folded back flat against its body. They reach a maximum length of 11 feet and weigh up to 440 pounds.
Striped marlin, are closely related to white marlin, Tetrapturus albidus. White marlin occur only the Atlantic Ocean, while striped marlin occur only in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The two species are similar genetically, as well as in appearance. They may eventually be classified as sub-populations of the same species. In any case, the evolutionary divergence of white marlin from striped marlin appears to have been a relatively recent event.
