Sailfish Pictures Showing This Fish with a Distinctive Sail-Like Fin |
 |
|
Sailfish grow quickly, reaching five feet long in a year, and can grow to be 10 foot long and weigh up to 200 pounds. The largest fish are usually females. They spawn during the summer months, with the females swimming through shallow water with their dorsal fin above the water surface. One or two males will swim along side and spawn near the surface. A female may release as many as four million eggs. Hatchlings are only .125 inches long. By the time they are eight inches long they have all the characteristics of an adult, including the sail and the elongated jaw.
