Blue marlin, Makaira nigricans, spawn between May and November and a single spawning can produce millions of eggs.
Blue marlin are prized by “sport” fishers and trophy hunters because they will fight for many hours before finally being too exhausted to resist being hauled in. Its flesh is served raw as sushi in Japan and Hawaii. Japanese and Cubans kill over a thousand pounds annually from the Caribbean region alone. Blue marlin are also killed as incidental kill in longline fishing. Within 200 miles of the U.S coastline fisherman must release any billfish caught, but they rarely survive due to damage during the capture process.
