The Striped dolphin, Stenella coeruleoalba, is one of the most abundant and widespread dolphins in the world, and is found in temperate and tropical waters of all the world's oceans. It is similar in shape to several other dolphin species, but its coloration is very distinctive.  It has a white or pink underside, and a light grey flank, with black bands that circle the eye and continue across the back to the flipper that is also black. Two black stripes start behind the ear, with one ending just above the flipper, and the other extending along the flank and ending under the belly just before the tailstock.

The striped dolphin tends to move in large groups often more than 100 animals, sometimes up to 1,000 animals, and they also mix with common dolphin, in temperate and tropical off-shore waters, feeding on small pelagic fish and squid.

Striped dolphins become sexually mature at about seven feet long, between six to 12 years old. Females give birth every three to four years to a single three foot long calf during the summer or autumn after a gestation period of about one year., with lactation lasting just over a year. The calf at birth weighs around 22 pounds and will grow to reach eight feet long and around 150 pounds, with an estimated longevity of 58 years.

The striped dolphin is acrobatic and will breach and jump high above the water surface, and swim very rapidly.  Striped dolphins have been captured but they do not survive more than a few days due to a failure to feed.

Striped dolphins are killed as bycatch in gill net. Drift net, and purse seine fisheries. In the western North Pacific and the Mediterranean they are in serious decline due to hunting, over-fishing, and disease.

Japan has hunted Striped Dolphins in the western Pacific since at least the 1940s. During the "Striped Dolphin drive" at least eight thousand animals are killed each year and in one year 21,000 were killed. Since the introduction of quotas, this number is now one thousand animals slaughtered each year.
