Fraser's Dolphin Facts and Photos on this Dolphin that Inhabits Deep Oceans

Top Right Solid Corner

Fraser's Dolphin, Lagenodelphis hosei, live in deep, warm temperate,  subtropical and tropical oceans, including the Pacific, and in some areas of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.  They are easily recognized by a black/grey stripe down their flank from eye to the anus, with a brownish-grey topside and a white or pale pink belly. Fraser’s dolphins have a stocky body, a small beak, and a triangular fin.

The Frazer’s dolphin is usually in large groups of up to 100 animals, but has been seen in much larger groups of several hundred, and sometimes in mixed groups with the smaller whale species. They swim with a splashy style and make a distinctive froth wake.

When mature, Fraser’s dolphins are about six to nine feet long and weigh over 350 pounds. They mature sexually at between six and ten years old, and the females give birth to a three foot long calf after a gestation of about a year,  once every two years. They are estimated to live to be around 18 years old.

Fraser's dolphins will dive deeply to feed on pelagic fish, squid and shrimp found below the surface of the water  at 600 to 1500 feet deep, and use echolocation to find they prey in these dark waters. The worldwide population of Fraser's dolphins is unknown and for the most part they are not considered very abundant.

Fraser's dolphins are killed as bycatch in fisheries operating in pelagic waters such as driftnets, gillnets, and trap nets. They are killed in tuna purse seine fisheries in the eastern tropical Pacific and the Philippines, and are directly hunted and harpooned by fisheries in Indonesia, Japan, the Lesser Antilles, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka for meat and oil.

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species considers Fraser's dolphins as "Data Deficient" due to insufficient information on population status and trends. They are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.
