Grizzly bears, Ursus arctos, Ursus arctos horribilis, can move fast for their size, up to 30 miles an hour, and can be dangerous to people, especially if surprised or if people come between a mother and her cubs. They normally avoid all contact with people, and do not view humans as prey. However they are among the most aggressive of bears as they are too large to climb trees, so their danger response is to stand their ground and fight an aggressor. Mothers defending cubs account for more than 70% of all known grizzly bear on human attacks.
Grizzly bears mate from early May to July, and although gestation is only around 70 days, gestation is suspended, and the fertilized egg does not implant itself in the uterus until the female has put on enough body fat to den for the winter. The dens are typically at a higher elevation, and dug under rocks, in a hollow tree, or in crevices and caves. The females give birth in the den in January or February, with a litter size of one to three, although two is typical. The cubs weigh about one pound at birth, and the mother will stay in the den to nurse them until they are around 20 pounds and the family emerges from the den in April or May. The cubs remain with the mother for at least two years. Left alone by man, they live to around 20 to 25 years old.
